It is said that the British dropped sailors on the island of Martinique and registered the rock as a ship, the HMS Diamond Rock. A short time later the French attacked the island of drunken sailors and retook the rock.

• Diamant Beach: The beach, one of the longest on the island, is fringed by sea grapes and palm trees. The waves are a bit bigger there than on the other southern beaches, but it is somewhat sheltered by Diamond Rock, the offshore island.

• Diving: Le Diamant is considered to be one of the 80 most beautiful diving sites in the Caribbean Sea.

• Ranch Jack: Ranch Jack offers hour-long horseback rides across the Martinique countryside, as well as children's lessons and half-day excursions that take guests through the forest and to the beach.

Le Ponton: This friendly restaurant is elevated over the ocean on a wooden deck filled with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. Overlooking a marina, Le Ponton has remained a local favorite for over thirty years and attracts a lot of fun-loving boating types.

Entertainment and nightlife

Fort de France, the island's capital is about an hour's drive away from the town. Most of the night action is concentrated in this cosmopolitan city and here you can find a watering hole, bar, or nightclub of your choice. You can dance away the hours in a disco, try your luck at the casinos, enjoy listening to zouk, a form of music unique to the island or enjoy a folkloric dance troupe performance.
